New app for all sky cameras

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know that I've just released an iOS app called Allsky Camera Viewer on the AppStore. The app shows the live image from your allsky camera website. The app supports widgets showing the live image and also a lock screen widget giving you quick access to the app with the live view.

The app also contains a simple browser so you can browse everything else on your allsky website like timelapse movies, keograms etc. In the live view you can double tap to quickly zoom into an interesting area of the image.

It's a free app without ads, feel free test it out and just let me know if you have any suggestions for future updates.

@gostnghost, thanks for doing this. I don't have an iOS device so can't try it. What can this do that a regular browser can't do?
Is there anything Allsky can do to enhance your application?

Thanks Eric! At the moment it is more or less a substitute for a web browser, but I feel it's simpler and faster to use when view the live image. As a Northern Lights photographer I constantly checking my camera some nights when the forecast and weather is looking good, and for that I find the app much easier to use.

Also the widgets option maybe makes it a bit more useful than a regular browser.

Hopefully the app can evolve over time as more people starts using it and give some feedback.

As an example it would be great if some of the Allsky settings were accessible in app, giving the user options to control their system with just some easy buttons. One again, you can do it from a web browser but maybe it would make some things easier.

So feel free to drop ideas and to anyone using the app, don't hesitate to give me some feedback on new features.

Is it for pointing at the remote website, or the local one on the Rpi?

I've developed if for the remote site, but local should also work if you remove the login dialog.

Is this only useable if you publish your allsky to a public webpage?

I am using webui only right now (no website publishing setup) and I can't seem to make your app work using a "web address" of the local IP address I use for webui.

It should work, maybe you have a login requirement on your local site? That could cause some problem. Basically what the app needs is a URL link to the live image, like "http://192.168.1.100/current/tmp/image.jpg" and then a URL link to the main site you're using. Hope that helps.

ok, I'll play with it more.

I do have a login setup to the webui and also there is a "public" URL (not published on a website but accessed if you are on my local wifi) which is the local allsky IP address with public.php appended which is supposed to be a quick and dirty way to view the most recent image without having to log in, which the fam uses so they can see the image without potentially screwing up the settings i set in webui.

Any chance the two of you could work together to create a single app that works on both operating systems?
I would think that would be less confusing for the Allsky community and may result in a "best of both worlds" app.
And if we eventually add something to Allsky to support this, we'd like to do it just one way.

Eric, the best solution for a single app would be to develop in a cross platform language so it only has one code base. I currently just develop in Xcode (iOS) mainly due to the fact it's the only IDE I've learned over the last couple of years. Haven't had the time to read up on cross-platform development yet. Maybe someone here knows how to do cross platform development. If needed, I'm willing to share my code.

As for further development it would be nice to implement functionality for the admin part of Allsky, maybe some simple buttons to control the Allsky software etc. Haven't looked in to how to communicate with Allsky yet but maybe you have some ideas on how we could do that?

Just want to let you know that I just pushed v1.3 to AppStore where I fixed a bug where text fields in the Settings page wasn't visible if phone was set to dark mode. The new version should appear in the next day or two.

Great iOS app I use it every day! Any chance you could push an update to allow non-https WebView targets? I am observing that when I configure non-local-network plain http allsky websites the “Live”, “Browser” and widget functions fail to load.

I speculate this might simply be a case of asserting NSAllowsArbitraryLoadsInWebContent:

I've just pushed a new version to App Store, v1.4. In that I check that http URL works (Non https) and I also added a new tab for WebUI, the backend site of Allsky. Under settings you set the URL to the WebUI and you login credentials. The app should then autologin when you open the WebUI tab.

Here are a couple of screenshots from the new version.

I've gotten a couple of emails asking what URL should be inserted into settings. Basically you can see these URL text fields as an address field in a browser, enter the same URL as you would in a web browser. So to test the URLs, you can enter them in a web browser to see that they work.

The new version 1.4 is now in processing status at Apple, so it should appear within a day or two.
