It would be nice to have this function in the sidebar, too (or does it already use the internal one so this function comes for free with the update)?

Thanks for the suggestion!

For now the text input is just a textarea, and that markdown feature is only available when using the default vscode editor.

I don't know if there's a way to display the editor into the webview itself. But I'll look into that
