A user of mine requests the ability to independently show/hide objects in volume view and surface view.

Currently the checkboxes in the object list show/hide in both.

Do they really need two independent controls, one for the volume view and one for the surface view?

What is the specific case they want?

You could play with opacity, which affects only the 3D view, or you can independently turn off all of the surface view outlines. Not sure if either of those workarounds helps.
