Spiked wooden balls as a trade good?

I've been enjoying watching this AI but it always seems to have immense trouble with trading. It uses meals as a trade good which usually doesn't give good returns, or any at all. It also cuts into the eventual food management issues. Can the AI focus on using spiked balls instead? Or even stuff like crafts? They would probably be a much more reliable industry.
