Define it
The Fundamentals section of the course should serve as a staging ground for the new cohort (Sally's words). In addition to the tech-ed and PD adjectives, they should start learning how to self-organise as a community. However, at the start of Fundamentals, it is usually volunteers (and often staff) that coordinate to organise the Saturday class.
Exemplify it?
In WM5, the launch of Fundamentals was done by cohort founders, Nirmeet and support from other staff members. Trainees in WM5 were more passive regarding the organisation/facilitation of Saturday classes during Fundamentals.
Explain it
Traditionally, the organisation of Saturday classes has been considered the responsibility of volunteers rather than trainees.
🧭 Suggest strategies
Some thoughts on this:
Add morning orientation to Fundamentals.
Make it clear that the whole community takes responsibility for facilitating the day classes.
Audit the blocks so the instructions are as water-tight as possible without being super prescriptive
