As a new locker owner, I want to immediately understand what my locker does for me

---- WIP ----

Something we've all felt as a group (and has been STRONGLY underscored by the user testing results) is that people will understand their locker much more clearly and easily through the utility that it provides - a simple way to access all of my contacts, a place to view all of my photos, an easy way to find an old tweet. Currently their first experience of the locker presents them with the task of connecting and syncing their data without any context as to why they would want to do that. Additionally, the current dashboard is left somewhat in limbo with connectors + synclets coexisting as separate entities.

We can solve both of these by augmenting the guided setup to begin with Apps and lead to data, thereby shifting the focus away from the current dashboard (making that more of a developer-only view for the time being). Additionally, by actually showing the utility in parallel to data syncing, the owner understands why they should be connecting services to their locker.

Proposed Work

  • Create start screen as seen in first wireframe.
  • Migrate guided setup code into a drop down tray such that the service connection steps are done in parallel with the app.
  • Make current dashboard a "developer option" - i.e. most locker owners won't see it, but it will live in parallel for devs who need deeper configuration access, debug output, logs, etc.

Wireframes

Start Screen Wireframe 1

First frame of contacts app, shows utility in parallel to data sync "requests" Wireframe 2

At least one service is connected and app has data, additional syncing is encouraged, but happens at the owners discretion Wireframe 3

When owner is using the app, the services tray is hidden, but can be opened at any time Wireframe 4

Contacts App

First Steps

  • Create full mockups (with Fissel)
  • Slice mockups into HTML/CSS/JS
  • Migrate Guided Setup code into app drop down tray

Stakeholders

  • Tom
  • Matt
  • Chris

Dependancies

  • Guided setup (code will be migrated into this)
  • Search (needs to be an app)

Acceptance Criteria

  • New Locker owners are presented with utility prior to and in parallel to syncing data into their Locker
  • New Locker owners are presented with the new start screen (presenting apps)
  • The contacts, photos, links, and search apps can be accessed directly from the start screen
  • When first using an app, a person is encouraged to connect to more services and add more data to their Locker via the drop down tray
  • Developers still have a simple means of getting to the current dashboard.
