ISO does not require a period following table and figure captions. #24
Comments
What happens if there are two sentences in the caption? |
ISO does not require a period at the end of a caption, nor does it prohibit it

SMPTE can (but does not) require a period. I am still trying to determine where I found the original requirement in 2020. It may have been in an older version of ISO, not the 2021 version. I have encountered the requirement elsewhere pertaining to engineering documents. I removed the requirement, because when I commented on it in a document, it was pointed out to me that it is not an ISO requirement. I checked and the it is not, at least not as of 2021. We can discuss and come to an agreement as to whether or not the requirement should stay in the AG-04 or not. |
My reasoning for requiring a period is that not requiring a period makes a special case of a single sentence caption. |
For consistency, then. Valid point. A similar case can be made one way or another for bullets, ordered lists, and descriptions in table cells. When dealing with bullets/ordered lists, I maintain the grammar format throughout the set of bullets or the list. Same with table cells, when possible. If periods or other punctuation are warranted, then I add them. In Terms and Definitions, there is no period at the end of a definition, unless it contains more than one sentence, or actually, a phrase, plus one or more sentences. Ideally, a definition contains only one phrase that is not a sentence, and that can be dropped into a sentence in place of a term. Occasionally, however, a definition is more complex, and requires more than one sentence. So there is a similar consistency dilemma as with the captions. There is also the question of whether or not captions, clause headings/subheadings and table column headers should be sentence case or all uppercase initial letters (except for articles and prepositions). Currently, it is author's choice. I am not advocating for a requirement, just noting. |
Remove the requirement for a period following table and figure captions.
