Question: Can I use IPV6 in WhiteCore-Sim ? #249
Comments
Currently WhiteCore-Sim uses IPV4. I am sure however at some point down the road support for IPV6 will be implemented. Most ISP providers still generally default to IPV4 even though they have the ability to support IPV6. In most cases an ISP (Internet Service Provider) that provides an IPV6 address will also provide an IPV4 address to each of their users. This is to ensure compatibility with the standards used in each country. This also is generally due to older hardware still in use by many consumers (and some businesses) that cannot and or do not support the newer technology such as IPV6. Also viewers such as Firestorm, Singularity, Alchemy, etc while they generally use URLs to communicate may in fact have a hard time resolving an IPV6 address. In fact as far as I am aware even Linden Labs still uses the IPV4 protocol for Secondlife (and the new Project Sansar). Hope that helps somewhat. |
In germany will more and more ISP providers change to ipv6. So that a little problem is for users, when they must use ipv6. |
In all likelihood if they have an IPV6 IP address then they have an IPV4 address as well. Most network adapters today can handle both IP versions properly so even in Germany this shouldn't be to much of an issue, so long as the internet service provider is currently providing both an IPV4 and IPV6 address. You should keep in mind that the standard for most ISPs to do is to provide an address on both protocol versions to ensure stability and compatibility. We have IPV6 in the US to but our ISP providers do provide the IPV4 addresses as well. WhiteCore-Sim itself works on the IPV4 version but not on the IPV6 version. Much of this is going to come down to whether your users have network adapter hardware that can handle the IPV6 protocol along with the IPV4 protocol. Likewise most hosting companies recognize that users around the world still need to use the IPV4 protocol for various applications and services and so provide addresses on both protocol versions for their server hardware. Therefore using WhiteCore-Sim with an IPV4 address should not cause your users any problems even if they use an IPV6 address. |
