Battery charging stops

I have a T5s 2.7inch. I have hooked up a 3.7V LiPo battery to it and the bright blue charging light will come on for a few seconds but then both the charging light and the regular blinking light from the board running stop, even though it is still plugged into USB power. When measuring the battery with a multimeter, it only reads about 2.1V, which is the same as the reading I am getting from GPIO35. Even when connected for several hours, the battery charge does not go above 2.1V.
