Fullscreen option to set layout to fullscreen, without setting app to fullscreen mode

Currently, fullscreen-window does 2 things:

1. Setting the layout to fullscreen (no gap, no strut).
2. Signaling the app to switch to fullscreen mode.

For some apps, switching to fullscreen mode means showing an entirely different UI with undesirable behaviours (for example, Chrome hides the tab bar when fullscreen, with no option for Linux users to disable this). My intention, however, is only to see the app with maximal screen estate.

This is also a problem I found with many WMs. It would be great if we had fullscreen-window-layout-only to only show the app with no gap & strut, while not putting it into fullscreen mode.

Is maximize-column insufficient? It will use almost the entire screen estate.

I am reluctant to do this feature because it's quite a complex interplay between different window and compositor states. #1288 was error prone enough, this would be an extra layer of complexity on top of that.

maximize-column is good enough. This, however, would be useful for me because I set my struts large for aesthetics, while sometimes I want to be in "locked-in" mode (no gap at all) with Chrome/Brave still usable.

That being said, Niri is nearly perfect for all of my use cases already, to the point that I'm thinking about switching browsers instead. Great work!

It only maximizes the width, and leaves the height alone.

My use case is that I might have say several browser or terminal windows open on the screen at the same time, monitoring different things. I want to temporarily maximize one window, do some work in it and then un-maximize it, with zero changes to the original layout.

The current fullscreen implementation has some unwanted behavior (as mentioned, it hides the tab/URL bar) and also seems to, after un-fullscreening, move the window out of any existing layout configuration and append it to the end of the workspace.

Then I am crossing my fingers that you will find the time to implement it. A toggle-maximize action that works similarly to maximize-column and is reversible with no side effects (with regards to moving windows or modifying the layout) enables some efficient workflows.

My proposal differs from OP's slightly in that I still want gaps, struts, borders etc. to be visible though, similar to what maximize-column does.
