The more natural place to create it, is via process_otf_map. OTH working off the specfile is easier.
The spec file viewer creates PNG's, but a fits file is a good alternative for more interactive viewing.

There are actually two versions of this possible: the SpecFile version, and the RAW version. We generally focus on the former, but never bother to look at the latter.
The RAW version will be a single plane, not cube, since each roach board (4 pixels) has a different cadence, although this is true for the SpecFile too,

new script make_spec_fits.py does this.
issue can be closed.

The WCS doesn't work in ds9 yet. this will be essential to read off the VLSR values
