I've been using the SBS add-on for a while, and all the programmes i watch tend to pause after a random amount of time –from a minute to half-an-hour – & multiple times per programme.
It's not uncommon to have 5 to 8 stops while watching something.
It looks like it's pausing to buffer, but doesn't actually pause and show the buffer UI (in the default Kodi skin, the ring with a buffer percentage in the middle of the screen) unless i manually pause it.
If the user takes no action, it stops, appears to buffer a little, plays a few frames and stops again, appears to buffer, then stops again, etc. essentially stuttering through the video stream
If the user does pause, the stream is properly paused and, when play is pressed to resume playback, the expected behaviour on running out of buffer happens: the stream is properly paused to buffer, the buffer fills up to 100% and playback resumes.
I'll try to grab logs next time i use the add-on, but one last thing that may be important: my kodi box uses a wireguard tunnel to Sydney, as i'm currently overseas. I have fibre and am coming out of a datacentre, so while i'm not excluding bandwidth issues, i don't think that's the problem.
I tried lowering the stream bitrate in the add-on's setting, but it makes no difference to the issue i'm experiencing and describing.

hey @axelsimon thanks for the detailed description
If you could enable debug logging and reproduce the issue and upload that would be awesome.
To give some small technical info - The add-on tries to use the inputstream.adaptive add-on for playback which atm only has a 1 segment buffer. The SBS streams look like they have 6 second length segments, so a max of 12 seconds is buffered for the player. The log might reveal if you're having intermittent delays in your connection...
First of all, thanks for writing this add-on!
