Cost Optimization for AWS SaaS Boost Deployments

Hello Community,

I'm reaching out to gather insights and share ideas regarding the cost aspects of our AWS SaaS Boost deployments, particularly focusing on cost optimization strategies. My primary interest lies in understanding the priorities and tasks outlined in the AWS SaaS Boost roadmap for this year, specifically those related to cost management. This information is crucial for aligning our development efforts and determining the inclusion of cost optimization tasks in the roadmap.

Target Deployment Models

1. Lower-End SaaS Deployments: For tenants in lower tiers, targeting costs around $50 - $75 for tenants and $200-300 (or less) for the Control Plane.
2. Medium and Higher-End SaaS Deployments: respectively

Objective

1. Lower-end SaaS deployments for tenants in low trier (with a target of tenants costs around 50 - 75 USD and another 200-300 USD for Control Plane)
2. Medium and Higher-end SaaS deployments respectively.

Current Cost Observations
As we develop our lower-end SaaS deployments, we've noticed higher-than-expected monthly costs, despite minimal activity on the deployed applications. Here's a breakdown:

• VPC: Approx. $130-110 (Transit Gateway VPC Attachment Hour costs)
• Elastic Compute Cloud: Approx. $10-15 and $70 for NAT Gateways and NAT Gateway Hours, respectively
• Elastic Container Service (AWS Fargate): $13-14 and $58-68 for 2GB Memory/1 vCPU
• Relational Database Service: Approx. $30 for db.t3.micro instance and $27 for gp2 storage
• Elastic Load Balancing: Approx. $40 (ALB hours)

Concerns and Requests for Feedback

• The reasons behind these higher costs are unclear to me, as is the monitoring and optimization of these costs.
• Based existing tagging for tenants (Tenant/<tenant_identifier> & aws:cloudformation:stack-name/<tenant_identifier>) resulted in an approximate cost of $45 per tenant/month. However, major costs seem to be associated with the Control Plane, escalating with the number of tenants.

Seeking Community Input

• Feedback on Current Costing - Insights or experiences regarding similar cost structures.
• Cost Optimization Ideas - Specifically for lower-end tenants. Any strategies or methods that have proven effective in managing and reducing costs.
• Roadmap Inquiries - Are there any specific tasks or issues in the current SaaS Boost Roadmap that focus on cost reduction? If so, please provide details.
