This release is a major advance on the previous Alpha release(s). Stability is much improved. Databases are more compact and use less memory. Sorting works properly. New types of database searching are available. This version is made available to the public using my triplehappy.com website.

Tarrasch V3 Alpha V2016-03-12.a

This release is a comprehensive upgrade to the 2015 Alpha versions. Most importantly, a new compact in memory database system has been introduced, for lightning fast searches, much smaller database files, much quicker database builds, and elimination of the nasty start delay as the demo database builds from .pgn (since the demo database binary is now smaller than the .pgn we include it in preference to the .pgn). The Kingbase Lite 1M game database from Pierre Havard is included in the binary.

As it turns out Github won't let me add the binary because it's too big. Update 24Sep2016 I used to have a link to setup-tarrasch-v3-demo-2016-03-12-a.exe on my server here, but it was a 100M file that was wasting valuable space on my server and I've removed it. I can't imagine that file would be of any use to anyone at this point - if I am wrong contact me at billforsternz at gmail dot com and I will make other arrangements.

This updated alpha release features a makefile for Linux. See my development blog for build instructions. My Linux testing was performed on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. The program now builds and runs reasonably on Windows, Mac and Linux; The Mac and Linux versions are really developer only, a lot of work is needed to bring these versions up to full functional equivalence with the Windows version. Developers can explore the differences by checking use of the THC_WINDOWS, THC_MAC and THC_LINUX conditional compile directives.

As before, users who aren't interested in the source code or development can run a reasonably functional alpha version of Tarrasch V3 for Windows by downloading and unzipping TarraschV3Alpha.zip into any convenient directory. Only one small functional improvement has been made since the last version; (An [embarrassing] bug fixed: Previously checking "Use clipboard as temporary database" in the database player view would crash the program).

This is the first alpha release of the Tarrasch Chess GUI V3. It is intended for early adopters and testers. It hasn't been exhaustively tested, but it is usable and useful.

Any reasonably proficient Windows user can try out this program. Simply copy TarraschV3Alpha.zip to a suitable directory and unzip it completely. I use and recommend 7zip for this purpose, but there are many solutions, including copy and paste within Windows explorer.

Once unzipped, run Tarrasch.exe. On the first run, the program creates a demonstration database. This is a one time operation that takes a few minutes. Please have patience.

For more information see my development blog at triplehappy.wordpress.com.
