building 1.7.7 in ubuntu 24.04: xcb-aux not available

hi,

I want to try 1.7.7 as the latest 1.7.5 in ubuntu repos freezes the computer from time to time for me.

I used this so far to install dependencies:

sudo apt install -y bison flex pkg-config libcairo2 libxcb-xkb-dev libxcb-cursor-dev libxkbcommon-dev libxkbcommon-x11-dev
sudo apt install -y libxcb-ewmh-dev libxcb-icccm4-dev libxcb-randr0-dev libxcb-xinerama0-dev libxcb-keysyms1-dev

but I still get

Package 'xcb-aux', required by 'virtual:world', not found

I recently moved to ubuntu from win so am I not sure how this should be handled. Anyone has some idea?

I don't run ubuntu 24.04 myself, but I've ran the live-cd in a virtual machine and the above 'apt install' work fine here.
Make sure your index is up2date sudo apt update, maybe an ubuntu support channel can give better help? I am not too familiar with the latest version.

sorry maybe I wasn't clear in my explanation...

if I do apt install rofi (even after apt update) I get 1.7.5, so I want to build from source to get 1.7.7

I run the above to install dependencies, and then if I do

    mkdir build && cd build
    ../configure

I get

...
checking for gio-2.0... yes

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

you are missing dependencies:
https://github.com/davatorium/rofi/blob/next/INSTALL.md#dependency

I think this one might be libxcb-util-dev (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xcb-util)

sudo apt build-dep rofi might help pulling in some of the dependencies. (if you have source packages enabled).

I dont have source packages so build-dep didn't help.

But the missing dep did the trick! thanks (xcb-aux vs xcb-util was the confusion).

Incase it helps someone, I had to also use autoreconf before ./configure or I would get these:

         You should only need it if you modified 'acinclude.m4' or
         'configure.ac' or m4 files included by 'configure.ac'.
make: *** [Makefile:2071: ../aclocal.m4] Error 127

so this worked.

autoreconf -f -i
mkdir build && cd build
../configure

Thanks.. Tried it here on 24.04 vm and it did not require me to rerun autoreconf.

Did you modify configure.ac?

I modified it, but just in case downloaded the tar.tz again and overwrote the modified with the original one, but still kept bugging me about it, maybe it kept the info it was modified somewehre else...

Also, I just had to do this:

sudo mv themes /usr/share/rofi

or I would get an error about non existing theme rasi.

It might look at timestamps, so overwriting it might still trigger it.

make install should normally install the themes.
