According to mushanshitiancai/vscode-paste-image#105

This repository has not seen any activity in over 3 years. There is an actively maintained fork here: https://github.com/telesoho/vscode-markdown-paste-image

This extension may benefit from syncing updates from this repository, and/or pushing our updates to the community maintained fork (such as the wl-paste / Linux Wayland support).

I was literally coming here today to raise this issue as a suggestion having looked to paste a few gifs into a note this morning. I think it would be a great move to get access to the new features if it can be achieved.
