just to point you into a direction -- we use shell scripts for debian/ubuntu and FreeBSD, e.g. over at https://github.com/robur-coop/albatross (take a look into the opam file)

the shell scripts only do stuff if (a) invoked manually or (b) running under orb -- that's why we release these exact opam files to the repository (and the shell scripts don't have an effect).
