Description

The Ubuntu docs could use some love. The user experience of hitting the overview article is a bit of an overload and doesn't really tell the user where to go or what to do if they're just trying to get .NET installed. Part of this bad experience is generated from the path a user takes from the .NET Downloads page. They're directed to the Linux Overview article which then links them to the Ubuntu Overview article. Instead, it should link directly to the Ubuntu Install article.

Additionally, people may feel the need to hit the overview first when going to install, which may not really help them get going. We've identified a few things we can do to simplify the process and hopefully improve the user experience:

  • Overview article should start with a list of supported Ubuntu versions instead of the table of methods of installing.
    • Let's take a look at what the older overview articles for Ubuntu had, before a lot of the troubleshooting problems appeared and we had to patch the docs up over and over.
  • Overview should be broken into two articles
    • Decision guide
    • Simple introduction (could we actually just do this on the install page??)
  • The install article should be the article that's linked to from the overview page, and it should be listed first in the TOC.
    • Further, the TOC section should be expanded.
