How do permanent rooms work?

Permanent rooms are essentially identical to temporary rooms, the main difference being that permanent rooms can have custom URLs. At the moment, only permanent rooms can configure user roles and permissions.

How do I create a permanent room?

Click "Create Room" in the navigation bar at the top. Bookmark the room you create so you can get back to it easier.

I no longer see my permanent room on the browse page. Where is it?

To save on resources, the server will unload rooms after a certain period of inactivity. The room can be loaded by navigating to the room at https://opentogethertube.com/room/<NAME>, where <NAME> is what you put into the "name" field when you created it.

Why do YouTube videos sometimes have no title or thumbnail, but they can still be played?

This probably means that the server was unable to get that information because it ran out of YouTube API quota.

'Why does it say "Out of quota" when searching for YouTube videos?

YouTube searches are expensive to perform. Because of this, searches are rate limited. If this happens, just do the search on YouTube and copy the link.

I'm trying to play an MP4, and there's no video/audio, but it works offline. What's wrong?

This is likely because your browser doesn't support the audio codec that the video uses. (#305) For best results, make sure all your videos use the aac codec.

The following command remuxes the video streams, converts the audio streams to aac, and converts the subtitle streams to mov_text.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vcodec copy -acodec aac -movflags faststart -c:s mov_text fixed.mp4

If you are still not seeing video, try this one, which also transcodes the video to x264.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vcodec libx264 -acodec aac -movflags faststart -c:s mov_text fixed.mp4
