Unfortunately I'm completely in the dark in terms of what the "best" UX for Mac OS users is these days. I'm sure Apple has enforced some standards, but I don't know how important it is for Mac apps to adhere to them.

Some research suggests a few possibilities:

  • .pkg
  • .dmg
  • App store (custom format?)
  • Just use the CLI, I guess?

Feedback needed:

  • How important is having these types of installers available to Mac users?
  • Are there other formats that would be considered important?
