Koka currently produces a .koka directory in the user's home directory.

The Arch Linux wiki has a nice overview of the spec.

Many users (including myself) try to maintain an uncluttered home directory and following the spec helps facilitate that.
A simple environment variable that let's the user control the location is also an acceptable alternative (to me).
