Describe Your Issue or Question

I used the readme to start with docker-timemachine installed on use external disk, used the command suggested, after fix several troubles, I now keep getting restarting with this error:

You're telling it to use -e EXTERNAL_CONF="/users" which gets mounted by -v /mnt/z/Docker:/users but apparently there are no .conf files in that directory that are used to specify your user configs. Also posting the docs for user configs just in case but it looks like you get the concept, you just need to make sure you're mounting in the configs.

Your bind mounts are messed up, assuming you’re talking about the home directory of the host since it’s /host/path:/container/path

Mr. Bentley, Thank you very much for your help. I created a file timemachine,conf and copied to /mnt/z/Docker, it worked. I know Linux very well, but never used docker. Now with your help, my docker timemachine runs without problem, how do I add it to the TimeMachine backup disk? The command runs on windows 11, ip 192,168.2.197, I can smb://192.168.2.197 with my windows username, but it will not accept username/password "timemachine/timemachine". If you actually only want to use a single user, there is no need to use the EXTERNAL_CONF option - the default SMB option will work for your needs as the credentials will be set from env var. So your run command could/should be as simple as:

docker run -d --restart=always \
  --name timemachine \
  --net=host \
  --ulimit nofile=65536:65536 \
  -e TM_USERNAME="timemachine" \
  -e TM_GROUPNAME="timemachine" \
  -e PASSWORD="timemachine" \
  -e TM_UID="1000" \
  -e TM_GID="1000" \
  -e SET_PERMISSIONS="false" \
  -e VOLUME_SIZE_LIMIT="0" \
  -v /mnt/z/TimeMachine:/opt/timemachine \
  --tmpfs /run/samba \
  mbentley/timemachine:smb

I am guessing the reason the share doesn't work is that you mapped your persistent data to just /opt instead of /opt/timemachine so Samba is trying to grant you access to a folder that doesn't exist. My example command above has the volume fixed to /opt/timemachine inside the container which is where the backup will go. Try that.
