Recognize standard EAN-13 barcode

First of all, thank you very much for this great project!

When I try to read a EAN-13 barcode eg. from a product from the supermarket, the script very often fails to recognize it. Even when I try the EAN-13 image from Wikipedia by providing it directly to the script ("Scan an image file"), it is not working.

I guess this behaviour probably (also?) depends on the fact, that the space around the barcode is too small, as this image
(border added, size reduced for this posting) is recognized. Unfortunately, very many products have their EAN-13 barcode also printed without this space, so the reader doesn't recognize their barcode.

Is there any way to solve this issue or around it?
