Microsoft PowerToys version

0.63

Running as admin

  • Yes

Area(s) with issue?

Mouse Utilities

Steps to reproduce

I experience ghosting of the highlighted areas that stay there and do not fade away. I need to reboot the system to "fix" this. For evidence I have added a screenshot of this window while creating the issue...
image

✔️ Expected Behavior

After left-click or right-click the highlighted area should not remain highlighted

❌ Actual Behavior

highlighted areas after mouse clicks sometimes remain highlighted.

Other Software

For what it's worth highlighting stays as an overlay for every application window, but it dissapears (temporarily) when hovering over the open application windows (in the taskbar)

This is pretty weird. Wonder if it's settings specific. Could you please send a /bugreport ?

Hi there!

We need a bit more information to really debug this issue. Can you add a "Report Bug" zip file here? You right click on our system tray icon and just go to report bug. Then drag the zipfile from your desktop onto the GitHub comment box in this issue. Thanks!

A user posted how to reproduce the issue in #22778

First, turn on the "Mouse Highlighter", then, press the left mouse button and do not release it. Then, press the left button of the touchpad (at the same time, the left button of the mouse cannot be released), at this time, move the mouse and you will find a fluorescent point on the screen. The fluorescent spots will not disappear.

Reversing the order in which the mouse and touchpad are pressed down also causes the same problem.

Change the key pressed by the mouse and touchpad to the right button, and this problem will also occur.

I have the same thing #29444 - but haven't yet seen a pattern to reproduce it

The steps to reproduce are quite clear and work for both left and right clicks. This is really quite annoying and would be great if it were prioritized.

it ALSO happen if you happen to:

  • click on a window (showing the hightlight)
  • alt tab to a window running as administrator (this is how i triggered this bug)
  • click in the admin window
  • switch to a window that is NOT the source of the original highlight
  • click
  • switch back to the window that was the origin of the highlight.

two gifs below show this in action

using another mouse (trackpad) to click

i've tried killing DWM. tried killing explorer. tried disconnecting monitors and nothing seems to fix it other than a reboot.

rebooting is incredibly annoying -- hence prioritizing this woudl be much appreciated. thx

If I disable mouse highlighter then the stuck circle(s) will be closed
So my workaround is to open PowerToys Settings and disable mouse highlighter and reenable it again

I have just posted issue #35910 because although I can replicate following the descriptions here.. I noticed it happening related to my dual screen setup and thinking it also generates this issue when waking up the second monitor.
