Tremolos

1. Horizontal position of slashes

Centred on the notehead, obviously.

2. Vertical position of slashes

Really this should just be a spec of what is desirable, but for now it’s an description of the current situation.

A is the current MuseScore default. Here the slash maintains the same just-above-centre position relative to each stave line, which results it in jumping unevenly rather than maintaining a consistent distance from the noteheads; the stem lengths are also irregular.

B is a manual adjustment of A where the slashes follow the contour of the notes. The distances between slash and notehead and between slash and stem end remain consistent.

C is B but with the slashes centred on the stave line (for the notes in spaces). This has a graphically unfortunate result on the intermediate notes where the slash falls exactly in the middle of a space, so demonstrates the benefit of the ‘off-centre’ position shown in A and B.

An example from in the wild: Sibelius: Symphony No 2, first violin part
