Hi I am Saif, an occasional Perl user, the current Grants Secretary. I am very interested in a good Perl IDE. A Linux user, my current IDE is Geany. It is a simple lightweight, cross-platform utility, which runs on everything from the Puppy Linux Live USB stick, raspberry pis, windows virtual machines etc. My ideal Perl-IDE would be one that is

1. Terminal based (why? low dependency, light weight, so will work across SSH, across platforms, etc)
2. Modular (why? Perl applications often have to interact with other applications, frameworks, etc)
3. Written in Perl (why? you understand the limitations of a language by using it, this would make the IDE developers add features that make the Program development easier, etc)
4. Low dependency (why? the more dependencies you have the more libraries/modules you force the user to install, tainting any paradigms the user may wish to use.)
5. Designed to grow...so eventually becoming a heavy weight, GUI application, with sophisticated thrills and frills.

Hi Bruno, I am no more miserable than usual.

But you are 100% right of course. Your project is wonderful. I am not an expert and code only in bad Perl, but I like to believe any language can do anything, and Pure Perl text editors exist. If something cant be done in Perl, then I would imagine that solving that problem benefits Perl. Sometime ago I started creating an IDE in Perl with the goal of coding in a scripting language that I had created for embedded systems. It was simple text editor, with the ability to execute the files it had created like a shell. It could even edit itself. So creating that came from a different project. That made me convinced it is doable...if I could figure out syntax high-lighting etc. LOL

Hey, there are no such thing of "bad Perl", Perl is perfecT! (just kidding, I got what you said :D)
AFAIK Padre is/was also a project of pure Perl IDE implementation. It did work for a time, but I think it's not maintained anymore.
Like I said, I really think it's an amazing idea, but I don't see the point of fighting against what already works pretty well and we can help ourselves improving these tools in our behalf ny enhancing Perl support on them.

I'm not pushing you in this direction (even if it sounds like a fun project), but you could probably integrate syntax highlighting via tree-sitter: https://tree-sitter.github.io/tree-sitter/syntax-highlighting

There is a module called PPI, (don't know who might be maintaining that) that seems superior to Treesitter. That should be one of the repositories for Perl-IDE, methinks.

I have been meaning to talk to @wchristian about moving the repo over here. It currently has a home in the perl-critic org, but I think it could possibly be more helpful to have it live here.

I currently have co-maint, but any non-trivial changes would need to be run past @wchristian, so it might not make a difference which org it lives in.

sadly a repo cannot be in two orgs, and i have only just woken up, but i feel it makes the most sense for ppi to live in the org whose software most intimately uses it, in order to address bus number issues and such

it might be useful for y'all to have a kind of bookmark repo that lists interesting other repos?
