Difference between step and advance function in agent.py?

agent.py seems to have two workflow functions:

    def step(self) -> None:
        """A single step of the agent."""

    def advance(self) -> None:  # noqa: D102
        pass

What is the difference between the functions step and advance? I could not find documentation about it.

If advance only exists for historical reasons, it might be a good idea to remove it to avoid confusion?

If it does have a purpose, please document it.
