  • points to a GitHub 404 page
  • haven't managed to find a matching CNAME file in public GitHub repositories
  • no success yet in contacting the owner (tried the registrar and Domain Contact)
• restructuredtext.net
  • website for a VSCode extension
  • owner isn't interested in making it available to us
• restructuredtext.com
  • very expensive at $2000
  • .com isn't a good fit, anyway

That's likely because gh-pages is often not a default repo branch and thus is not indexed. You could probably ask GH support to contact them.

We could always go for something from the new shiny gTLDs, like: restructuredtext.dev, restructuredtext.rocks, restructuredtext.art, restructuredtext.page, restructuredtext.fun, restructuredtext.rest, restructuredtext.directory, restructuredtext.technology, restructuredtext.website, restructuredtext.wiki, restructuredtext.wtf, restructuredtext.fans, restructuredtext.community, restructuredtext.fyi, restructuredtext.pro, restructuredtext.guru, restructuredtext.works, restructuredtext.engineering, restructuredtext.help.

.io is pretty common among open source websites, too. restructuredtext.io would probably be my second choice (restructuredtext.org being the first).

I had no luck reaching out to GitHub support. Due to their privacy policy, they can't contact the GitHub user linked to restructuredtext.org. I've also tried email various obvious @restructuredtext.org addresses, but email simply isn't configured for the domain, so I guess it's time to give up on it.

In other news:

• restructuredtext.io can be registered/renewed for around 30 USD/year, which is not too bad. There is some controversy around the .io TLD, however. If we go for a .io domain, we should at the very least donate the same amount to the Chagossians.
• restructuredtext.info is another option I would consider.

I think I need to be an organisation owner to do that? Are there any ramifications to doing so beyond the GitHub ecosystem?

Also, verifying the domain on GH doesn't automatically force anyone to host the website here. But it allows to have some trust labels in the UI.

I've added it in the org settings. To approve, add two TXT records to the DNS zone:

1. Subdomain _github-challenge-reStructuredText-organization, value 7d7dd62198.
2. Subdomain _github-pages-challenge-reStructuredText, value 3d254fd1c3298d4c48812afab28539.

I think we can change it later, if the need be.
