I'm not entirely sure how to implement this, but it would be nice to be able to enable the load remotely rather than the buttons.

Gees, apparently I have to buy a dev kit just to reflash this thing

Cypress provides a boot-load system that would allow re-flashing without a programmer. Unfortunately, Sparkfun did not implement it.

Per the revised Variable Load Hookup Guide, boards shipped after 24 May 2018 include the bootloader. The revised Variable Load Hookup Guide includes detailed and adequate instructions on how to use PSoC Creator to upload firmware changes.

The firmware included on the kit I received in June 2021 includes the feature to enable and disable the load using the serial connection.
