Disk quota missing from webmail (Roundcube).

Hi there!

I proactively apologize because this seems like a small issue that could very well be a misconfiguration of mine, but for the life of me, for the last 2 hours can't find a solution.

I span up an instance of roundcube in docker after I installed stalwart mail server, adjusted some settings on roundcube, and voila, successfully authenticated.

Changed some settings for the sieve plugin with answers I found on some of this git issues, all is well.

But I can't see the quota of a mailbox:

And I have set the disk quota in stalwart user settings:

I can't find the reason why that's the case. Read (in a quick google search) that dovecot is the one that should be "providing" this information. But after reading nothing about dovecot, I figured I would search stalwart server docs, settings, even roundcube plugins in case something needed to be enabled.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi there.

No, not really. All I found out was that roundcube's quota is shown when dovecot provides it. And since there is no dovecot here, only the jmap implementation for quotas, roundcube receives no information about he mailbox quota and just hides the bar that shows the available space.

So I googled/searched for some Webmail (like roundcube) that is specific for JMAP. But there were none. Most clients that are created for jmap, are deskop. Windows, linux, macOS etc.

I suppose you could (if you have the skills, I don't) to write a PHP plugin for roundcube that retrieves the quota using JMAP instead of dovecot.

There was nothing that I could install was a webclient that works with JMAP out of the box. I end up going with MAILU email server simply because I had more stuff figured out (had some prior experience with it).

Stalwart Mail Server seems kinda new, and I though I could get ahead by hosting it (future updates, new protocol for emails, nice UI that gets you started faster etc), but there are small things that make it hard.

For example the quota info is missing, and since I host on a small server (VPS) with 40Gb of disk, I put some limits to my users (friends and family), and I would like for them to manage their own mailboxes instead of me having more work on the server. Tried to avoid conversations like "I don't get any new emails" -> "Your mailbox is full" -> "Well, how can I know about that, where is it shown" etc etc.

If you manage to solve it, please share it here for me (I might revisit email server hosting in a year or two, probably a lot will change) and for people that will search for a solution in the future :)

PS: There is a permission for "quota". Just search "quota" in the admin interface (stalwart admin, not roundcube). I think the permission is about a user being able to read his quota or something? I just put "allow" on all 4-5 permissions regarding quota to see if that would fix anything, but sadly no. Saying this just in case you try to find a workaround, remember to search for quota permissions to make sure the user can see it.

Hi!

I feared that the mailbox quota was provided by Dovecot, so I didn’t have much hope…

For now, I’ve managed to mitigate the space issue by enabling “blob storage” with Cloudflare R2 (S3-compatible). They offer 10GB for free, and additional space costs $0.015 per GB per month. This lets me have one (or more if I want to configure a HA cluster) small and very affordable VPS (Hetzner and Netcup are good examples) for the MX, with separate storage.

So even if we consider 100GB of space, that’s $1.35 per month, or roughly $14.85 for 1TB. For now, it’s cost-effective enough for me not to worry much about the quota visibility in the webmail (also because not all my users use the webmail; some don’t even know it exists…). Anyway, it’s still worth looking for a solution, maybe to develop a plugin for Roundcube.

As for the sieve filters, have you managed to solve it? I see there are quite a few people on Reddit struggling to configure them… to be honest, I still haven’t tried myself.

Yes, for the sieve filters my only problem was the following: #396

Basically I used the configuration in roundcube config (quote from the question):

and also change the TLS (quote from the answer). Basically disabled the implicit TLS for ManageSieve listener from the admin UI, put the config to roundcube and worked.

I don't really have the VPS since I deleted it and can't get back the configuration, but that was it. I don't remember struggling with anything else.

As for the blob storage, I was waiting for Hetzner to release their Object Storages out of BETA and was planning to use it exactly for the purpose of storing the files. So you could probably use that at some point in the future (if you are not in a hurry). They said they will even have "free" (don't quote me on that, I vaguely remember their blog post), for transfers within their datacenters. So blob storage with emails to a VPS will be free. Outside of their infrastructure we will probably be paying.

Also keep in mind the read/writes for the blob storage. Don't know the pricing of ingress/egress of your provider. But it's easy to get a huge bill at the end of the month solely on transfers (a bit hard for email storage I assume, but still).

About the R2 storage, Egress is free, the API operations are not.
But even for API operations there's quite a generous free tier of Class A of 1 million/month operations and after it's 4.50$/million/month. Class B is much less: 10 millions free and 0.36$/million/month.

Hi, Stalwart does not implement the IMAP QUOTA extension yet but it is on the roadmap.

If you would like to try using a JMAP client instead, Stalwart does support the JMAP for Quotas extension.
