Ping alerts still sent even after friends list is refreshed

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. View friends list by launching app/clicking widget
2. hit refesh to make sure it's the latest list of friend
3. a few minutes later, you still get a ping notification of a friend checkin

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I shouldn't be notified of a friend checkin that I already saw

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
latest as of September 7

I like cheeses and skiing.
