Image handling question - figure vs. picture vs. img vs. ![]()

Hello, I am hoping for some clarification on what the differences are between using:

• {{< img >}}
• {{< picture >}}
• {{< figure >}}
• ![]() markdown

The best I can tell, img and picture are synonyms. figure is also exactly the same as img and picture but allows a caption.

Using markdown form is very basic, and doesn't allow applying classes or extra image options.

Am I warm? Really just want to understand when I should be using each of these.
