Creating menu for blogs page

Hello. We have a lot of blog entries and I've noticed that there is a plenty of space on the left hand side of the blog page. I am thinking about gutting the doks template for blog layout to add a menu there (maybe based on authors or other front matter attributes of the blog). Before I start doing that.. I wanted to know if such feature already exists somehow, or if anyone has a better suggestion on how I can accomplish that?
