Update University Allocations page #179
base: main
Are you sure you want to change the base?
Conversation
Remove references to Cheyenne.
Thanks @dphow ! I agree with removing all the Cheyenne technical information at this point. As for the submission dates, I'm deferring to @ShiraFeldman on those - she's been keeping track of the next dates with input from Dave and changing accordingly. |
@ShiraFeldman To explain, I proposed this change having interacted with a university professor having questions about how to get access to NCAR HPC and sharing this page at the time. I noticed the out of date text and pushed some suggestions mainly on removing references to Cheyenne. Only other issue was the next large allocation date that was unknown to me (at top of page, current date is in the past for March 12th). A last thought but less relevant for this issue is that Google search of "NCAR HPC Allocations" pushes the old ARC knowledge base pages to top of search results. Those pages are definitely out of date and its hard to steer users to this page when they are trying to figure out how to get access to NCAR HPC. This would be important to bring up with Dave and other ARC folks about Search Engine Optimization for our read the docs site and evaluating if we are effectively communicating NCAR allocation opps. To note, it was encouraged at ESPAT workshop this week the desire by Tony for more uni users to request and make use of NCAR HPC but quite a few members of the 100+ audience were unaware of how to navigate the process or even the availability of the resources. |
I see. Can you link me to the right page? I have a suspicion that we
already updated this page on the readthedocs, but the old knowledge base
page did not get deleted.

And this is the KB page that is outdated but comes up first when I Google "NCAR HPC Allocations University" https://arc.ucar.edu/knowledge_base/75694351 |
You're right, this is a readthedocs page that has not been fully updated.
(An issue across-the-board: we updated the deadline to 3/12/24, but now
that is in the past, so that needs to be updated across-the-board again.) I
need to find out what the next deadline date is.
As for scrubbing Cheyenne references: this page was "in line" for editing
but had not been edited yet. I will address this now since this is clearly
an important page. Dave will still want to review this page next, I'm sure.
Re Knowledge Base pages: I'm not sure when they will be deleted, or on what
schedule. I think that Ben, Dave, and I need to have a larger conversation
about KB pages and about the ARC editorial schedule.
Thanks,
Shira

To note, we should establish a method to enter a "variable" for this deadline date so it's change once rather than hunt down multiple pages to change it. Might need to make a file in repo to hold this kind of info and src it as needed, which we can help you with @ShiraFeldman |
Yes, that makes sense. For the time being, what is the next date?

Checking here if we can resolve the new conflicts here for this doc page on allocations and get this PR accepted. I do not know when the next allocation date is set. |
Thank you for following up. I'm still trying to get some questions answered:
Thank you! - Shira |
Removed new descriptiion for data analysis platform and updated some formatting/grammar.
Remove extra line
I think this PR is all good now, however, feel free to re-review it @ShiraFeldman. |
Remove references to Cheyenne.
Should we update any other sections? For example, when are the next large allocations requests due?
