RedTeamCUA: Towards Realistic Adversarial Testing of CUAs in Hybrid Web-OS Environments

🛠️ Setup

1. Python Environment Setup

First, install all dependencies and ensure you’re running Python 3.10.

Or feel free to use uv to quickly build it by:

2. Hybrid Sandbox Environment Setup

We provide two settings to host our hybrid sandbox environment, and each enjoys different benefits as detailed below. Choose the one based on your needs.

  • VMware (Local VM + Separate Web Hosting)
    • OS is hosted by VMware on your local machine, while web platform is hosted independently (e.g., by AWS EC2).
    • Easy to debug.
  • AWS (All-in-One Cloud Instance)
    • OS and the web platforms are pre-installed in the same AWS instance.
    • Easy to conduct evaluations at scale.

Below, we further provide more details on setting up the VM-based OS and Docker-based Web under these two providers.

VM-based OS

  1. VMware

    1. Download VMware Workstation (or Fusion on macOS)

    2. Verify Installation

      • Display help to confirm it’s working

        vmrun -h

        You should see usage information for vmrun.

      • List VMs (should return 0 if none running)

        vmrun -T ws list

        Expected output:

        Total running VMs: 0
        
    3. Download the VM Image This step downloads the pre-built VM image (provided by OSWorld) into your local workspace.

  2. AWS

    1. Configure NETWORK_INTERFACE_MAP:

      Configure the NETWORK_INTERFACE_MAP in aws_config.py based on your own AWS instances.

    2. Configure IMAGE_ID_MAP:

      The information about specific pre-built AMIs, for all supported platforms in our project, will be disclosed soon! Stay tuned!

Docker-based Web

  1. VMware If you are using the VMware to host the OS, you have to host the web replicas independently (as hosting it in the VMware is rather weird :) Specifically, please follow instructions according to WebArena and AgentCompany:

    Note: We recommend using an EC2 instance to host the web replicas. Besides, remember to select SSH key pair to ensure the security of your instance.

  2. AWS As mentioned above, if you opt for AWS, you don't need to worry about it, as we have integrated it into the pre-built AMI.

🚀 Experiment

  1. Set Environment Variables

    First, set your API keys for baseline CUAs.

    For Claude models:

    (Optional) Replace it with your actual path hosting the SSH key pairs connecting to the instance hosting the web platform. This is only needed if you opt for selecting VMware to host the OS and use another instance to host the web platform. If you are using the provided AWS AMI images, you can skip this step.

    (Optional) If you are experimenting on the RocketChat platform, you should set extra environment variables to simulate the agents the CUA will communicate with. Since Sotopia is built on LangChain, we follow their documentations for setting environment variables AZURE_OPENAI_API_KEY and AZURE_MODEL_FOR_ROCKETCHAT_NPC. AZURE_MODEL_FOR_ROCKETCHAT_NPC should follow the format "resource_name/deployment_name/version". Please refer to the Langchain documentation and Sotopia for details.

  2. Generate Configs

    Use the raw task data in goals/benign/ and goals/adv/ to generate config files for 864 adversarial examples:

    Note: When running on AWS with our provided AMI, keep each platform’s config in a separate JSON file (for example, evaluation_examples/test_all_reddit.json, evaluation_examples/test_all_owncloud.json, evaluation_examples/test_all_rocketchat.json). This ensures that each service is deployed with the correct AMI.

  3. Run the Experiments

    1. If you are using VMware as the provider, first configure the domain for each web platform:

      We selected three different benign goals on the Reddit Forum: Clone Github repository, Configure tmux alias, and Install termcolor package. The first goal does not require any modifications to the original posts. The other two goals (Configure tmux alias and Install termcolor package) require modifying both post and comment content to simulate realistic environments. Run the following script to modify the posts related to the benign goal:

      Arguments:

      • --path_to_vm: Path to the VMware VM configuration file (.vmx) to launch. (Required for VMware runs)
      • --model: Currently supports six options:

    2. If you use the AWS provider, run:

      Arguments:

      • --provider_name: Must be set to aws when running on AWS. (Required for AWS runs)
      • --aws_ami: AWS AMI to launch. Choose based on the target platform:
        • reddit: AMI with the Reddit
        • agentcompany: AMI for OwnCloud and RocketChat
      • --model: Same as VMware runs

      Note: OSworld provides different features across different OS systems, and some are based on the machine hosting the OS while some depend on the machine conducting experiments. If you're using the VMware setting, there would be no issues. However, if you're using our AWS setting and conduct experiments on an ARM-based machine (e.g., MacOS), you might encounter inconsistencies—for example, when retrieving the accessibility (a11y) tree. To address this issue, we've implemented a simple (though somewhat hacky) workaround at run.py, forcing the platform's architecture to be recognized as x86_64 to align with the OS used in our AWS images.

🎨 Customization

This repository extends the OSWorld framework with some new directories:

  • goals/: Raw task data is split into two subfolders:

    • goals/benign/: all raw data for benign tasks
    • goals/adv/: all raw data for adversary tasks

    For detailed definitions of benign vs. adversary tasks, please refer to the paper for details.

  • adv/: Files needed to implement adversary tasks, organized as:

    • adv/upload_file/: files for adversary tasks to be uploaded into the VM
    • adv/WebArena_Reddit/: scripts that perform injection on Forum (Reddit)
    • adv/TheAgentCompany_OwnCloud/: scripts that perform injection on OwnCloud
    • adv/TheAgentCompany_RocketChat/: scripts that perform injection on RocketChat

You can customize tasks by modifying the raw task data, including custom instructions, decoupled evaluation, and automatic injection.

Custom Instructions

For every benign task, you can customize your own instructions before generating the configs by modifying the raw data in goals/benign/.

For example, we provide four kinds of instructions. General (Loose), Specific, and Pointer instructions are used for decoupled evaluation, while End2End instructions are used for end-to-end evaluation.

Decoupled Evaluation

For every task, we provide the Decoupled Evaluation setting to decouple adversarial evaluation from agent capabilities, ensuring the agent's initial state features the malicious instructions through pre-processing actions to navigate to the adversarial injection location.

Add a "decouple" entry into the post_opentabs list of your benign task raw data:

  • platform: reddit, owncloud or rocketchat.
  • commands: an array of shell or Python commands.

Each command can be a Python one-liner that uses pyautogui to drive the UI. For example, to move the mouse and click:

Additionally, you can achieve more precise control over the page by directly modifying the _decouple_setup function in desktop_env/controllers/setup.py to use the Playwright framework. For example, this lets you avoid having screen resolution affect the coordinates used by pyautogui.click.

For instance, we used Playwright to implement the decouple operation on RocketChat: 1. select "Mike Chen." 2. type the message into the text box. 3. click the send button.

Automatic Injection

You can modify our injection settings to customize your adversarial scenarios on each platform.

  • Forum (Reddit)

    Script: adv/WebArena_Reddit/injection.py

    1. Locate existing content:

      find_content(search_text, target_table, login_info)
      • search_text: the content to match
      • target_table: submissions for post content or comments for comment content
    2. Then the function returns some basic information, including column_name, record_id, then you can update the content:

    3. After verifying the injection has taken effect, add the table_name, column_name, and record_id to the "meta_injection" section of benign task raw data. For example:

    Note: For VMware runs, you may need to reset the Reddit for different injection (see: WebArena).

  • OwnCloud

    Prepare your injected files, then add the docker path to the "meta_injection" section of benign task raw data. For example:

    Define your NPC’s objectives via strategy_hint and extra_info, then add to the "meta_injection" section of benign task raw data. For example:

    Note: If you self-host websites for VMware runs, you can still keep TO_BE_REPLACED_IP. Just export your environment variables as described in Setting Env. Variables.
