BistroCar serves up CoffeeScript from within your Rails application.
You’ll need to install node.js and CoffeeScript.
Add it as a gem dependency to you Rails application:
config.gem "bistro_car"
Add your CoffeeScript files to app/scripts
. Then in your layout or wherever else suits you, add:
<%= coffee_script_bundle %>
This will insert automatically link to your JavaScriptified CoffeeScript files. You might find it useful, for debugging purposes, to render your CoffeeScript inline, instead of linking to external scripts, you can do that with:
<%= coffee_script_bundle :mode => :inline %>
You can set this for the entire application:
BistroCar.mode = :inline
You’re encouraged to create only a single bundle, but sometimes you might find it useful/necessary to create multiple bundles for different parts of your application. In that case you can create a directory structure like this:
+ app + scripts + admin - admin.coffee - other_admin.coffee - application.coffee
Now you can require both bundles like this:
<%= coffee_script_bundle :admin %>
If you want to split the include position of your default and secondary bundles across the page (e.g. load default.js on top and candy.js at the bottom), pass in a :default => false
to avoid a reinclude of default.js
<head> <%= coffee_script_bundle %> </head> <body> … <%= coffee_script_bundle :candy, :default => false %> </body>
You can make BistroCar minify your JavaScript bundles using JSMin by setting:
BistroCar.minify = true
This is done automatically for the production environment.
You can also render CoffeeScript inline from within your erb templates like this:
<% coffee_script do %> x: x => x * 2 y: y => y + 2 <% end %>
